Seattle Creative Portrait Photographer | Learn from the Best

Sometime mid-2011, I signed up to attend a photography workshop in downtown Seattle. It was a workshop for beginners, but I was excited because I was going to meet Brian and Jennifer Hartman of Photo Elan!

To me, Photo Elan’s photography is everything I strive for. They capture the souls of their clients while photographing the beauty of the environment. They harness natural light, but often shoot with strobes. Their photography is honest and real, and they don’t cover up their photos with fancy photoshop actions and presets. From the moment I learned about Photo Elan, I could tell that Brian and Jennifer just knew how to get creative photos on the spot and I wanted so badly to be like them.

Their workshop was fun, well run, and I admired how even though it was a large group of people, Brian took the time to answer everyone’s questions. After the workshop, I went up to Brian and let him know that I admired his work and asked if there were any opportunities to assist him and Jennifer. I think I even added that I’d be happy to carry his coffee if it meant I could tag along with them.

Since that first workshop, I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge from Brian and Jennifer. I have assisted Brian in the beginner and intermediate workshops, helped them with off camera lighting at weddings, and they have even allowed me to second shoot a few wedding with them. My photography skills has grown leaps and bounds thanks to them, and I can’t thank them enough for sharing every bit of knowledge with me.

I also developed a friendship with another photographer who was there and a lot like me, emerging into the industry. Her name is Rachelle DeLuccio and she operates her business, Chellie Dee Photography, North of Seattle in the Everett area. I love keeping up with her work on Facebook. She is starting to specialize in newborns and she does a fantastic job at it! Rachelle and I talk every few weeks and we have some big plans in the future for some creative shoots together.

Brian and Jennifer have many workshops now for photographers on all levels — even for iPhone photography! If you live in the Seattle area and are interested in signing up, check out their upcoming workshop schedule by clicking here.

Now go check out what my weekly blogging circle has been up to by starting with my friend and fellow photographer, Huong Forrest. She also blogged about her favorite resource(s) today and you can read about what she found so valuable in 2012 by clicking here!

There are so many great stories about the people who were our mentors. If you’d like to honor one and make a donation to a great cause, check out the “Photo Idol” voting at PPA Charities.
